In 1972 cousins, Wayne and Norman Hurd had vision, and began developing this Hill Country ranch land into the resort area it is today. As the story goes, Wayne Hurd named the community after finding a horseshoe in the lakebed.

The next three decades the community grew, and was primarily a resort and retirement destination. Many of the homes serve as second-homes.  In 2005, the citizens of Horseshoe Bay voted to incorporate, and the City of Horseshoe Bay was born.
